These are the top-rated coffee shop in every state.

There is usually a queue at Starbucks for some reason. Not to knock the big green mermaid, which serves some decent beers, but if you go to many places around the nation, you’ll find dozens of little, local establishments serving much superior fare with no lines. This isn’t simply a local occurrence in Seattle or Portland. Every state offers a variety of coffee shops that roast their own beans, create their own beverages, and provide settings that are really distinctive to their locales.

So, which states have the greatest coffee shops? To find an answer to this enticing issue, we spoke with people all around the nation, took to the road, and, yes, even sought advice from experts on the internet. We discovered that no matter where you go in America, there is a location that will provide you with a better, more personalized experience than a large national chain. These coffee shops are a must-visit if you find yourself in any of these cities.

Prevail Union  in Alabama

Prevail Union seems to be a slick, premium coffee shop, equipped with pour-over coffees from across the globe. But go a bit deeper, and you’ll discover that this location on Dexter Avenue in Montgomery is rich with history. Prevail Union is located around the corner from the department shop where Rosa Parks worked the day she refused to give up her bus seat, and other buildings still have segregated water fountains as historical monuments, all of which give you a sense of the city’s civil rights history.

 Alaska’s Heritage Coffee Roasting Company

When you’re in the far-flung reaches of Alaska, finding anything other than salmon is difficult. Even though you can only visit Juneau by air or boat, Heritage Coffee in Juneau manages to source some of the greatest coffee beans from all over the globe. Heritage has grown to eight sites across the city with a homely, Alaskan vibe, where they roast the thing right in downtown Juneau. The business is also active in the Juneau community, giving to a variety of causes and supporting both children’s and arts groups.

Exo Roast Company (Arizona)

After stopping at El Guero Canelo for Arizona’s greatest hot dog, go to Exo for a strong injection of coffee to fend off your food coma. With drinks like the mesquite cold brew, you’ll get a really local experience. Alternatively, the chiltepin cold brew, a spicy, fruity coffee, is a good choice. The unique coffees attract some of Tucson’s most creative individuals to work from the store, so don’t be shocked if you see a musician you saw perform live the night before sitting next to you while you drink.

Mugs Coffee Company in Arkansas has an Instagram account.

This enormously popular coffee shop with Central Arkansas’ greatest cup of coffee can be found in North Little Rock’s Argenta historic area. The plush leather furniture and the wood on the walls give the area an Ozarkian flavor, yet the contemporary spirit of Little Rock pervades the whole space. Mugs Coffee Co. is known for its cuisine as well as its coffee culture, so the vibe may be confused for the aroma of freshly made coffee or pressed sandwiches.

Facebook: Temple Coffee Roasters (California)

Temple Coffee Roasters is without a doubt the most important establishment in its hometown. Temple is so outstanding that it has its own membership coffee club for people outside of California’s capital, not that Sacramento doesn’t have a terrific culinary culture of its own.

Sure, there are some wonderful locations in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but are they serving the Three Pillars Blend with flavors of chocolate, sugar, and dried fruit? That’s why Temple, more than any other California coffee business, has amassed a cult following well beyond the state’s borders.

Thump Coffee (Colorado) on Facebook

Despite the fact that Thump arrived to Denver from Bend, Oregon, it has quickly established itself as an essential element of the Denver coffee culture, owing to its extensive coffee variety and humorous quotations over the coffee bar. While the normal coffee beverages are good, do yourself a favor and try one of their specialized roasts, such as the North Fork, which has touches of citrus and chocolate in every sip. Thump is a handmade coffee business that doesn’t take itself too seriously, no matter what you order. And we’d rather come here than go someplace else in Colorado for that.

Facebook page for Fussy Coffee in Connecticut

Fussy Coffee at New Haven’s Science Park has an extensive menu, including Tokyo flat whites with miso and coconut curry cappuccinos, as well as a selection of exotic wines and Belgian-style French fries. And, despite the fact that the name suggests the restaurant caters to a picky audience, the remainder of the menu is diverse and open-minded. You may also get a Korean banh mi or a Thai peanut rice bowl to accompany your chai coconut cold brew.

Facebook: Brew HaHa! Delaware

Despite having eight locations around Wilmington and the neighboring regions, Brew HaHa! manages to maintain the sense of a small-town roaster, where the barista greets you by name and doesn’t even need to ask whether you’re having your usual. That’s because the people who started this business decades ago modeled it on a café they encountered in a little town in the Italian countryside, and they attempt to replicate that experience in each location. The approach has succeeded, as Delaware Today has rated it the finest coffee shop in Delaware for the last 23 years.

Bold Bean Coffee Roasters has a Facebook page.

While Panther Coffee in Miami and Buddy Brew in Tampa can both compete on a global level, Bold Bean in Jacksonville’s artistic San Marco district is the best place to escape the heat.

Spend a day here drinking their artisan pour-overs and you’ll witness plenty of artists, musicians, and start-up entrepreneurs interacting around you, even though Jax doesn’t receive nearly enough recognition for its arts community. Bold Bean is the place to go in Florida if you’re seeking for a coffee shop that feels precisely like one should.

Foxy Loxy Print Gallery and Cafe is a Facebook page in Georgia.

Some may assume that coffee and tacos are as bad for your digestion as soda and pop rocks, but after a lunch at this Savannah sidewalk café, you’ll think otherwise. The Tex-Mex food at Foxy Loxy works surprisingly nicely with the thick, robust coffees on offer. Several Latin-American-inspired coffees, such as horchata latte and classic café con leche, are also available. After devouring their beef and chorizo tacos, you’ll need them to wake you up. If you’re popping in for breakfast, try the huevos rancheros quiche, a spicy spin on the eggy coffee shop classic.

Paia Bay Coffee Bar in Hawaii has a Facebook page.

This stop in picturesque Paia Bay is hard to surpass in terms of diversity, surroundings, and practicality. To begin with, the village is the final touch of civilization before driving up Maui’s legendary Road to Hana, so if you need an espresso to get you through the journey, here is the place to go.

Second, the clientele at Paia Bay Coffee Bar is a blend of Maui magic, including the individuals who help to make this island so wonderful. It’s worth dropping in for a leisurely cup as the island wind blows through the dining room if you’re not in a rush to be on the road.

Facebook page for Idaho’s Flying M Coffee

Inspired by the Seattle coffee frenzy of the 1990s, University of Washington students Kevin and Lisa Myers married, moved back to Lisa’s home state of Idaho, and started this little store in Boise. High-quality coffee was served among a mishmash of old furnishings and quirky trinkets. When Flying M started roasting its own beans in the mid-1990s, it expanded even further.

Flying M is a well-known Idaho institution that also gives back. Every year, the store sponsors the Flying M for AIDS benefit exhibition, in which local artists auction off their works with revenues benefiting HIV and AIDS patients in the area.

The Wormhole on Facebook in Illinois

Though there are as many fantastic coffee shops in Greater Chicago as there are chronically unhappy Bears fans, it takes something unique to set a business apart. And occasionally that particular item is a Delorean, hollowed down and put above the bar. That’s what you’ll discover at The Wormhole, and although the automobile won’t transport you back 30 years in time, the ancient NES with all your favorite 8-bit games may. Yes, the coffee is also excellent. However, in a place where it is easy to come by, it is sometimes preferable to seek out nostalgia.

Fortezza Coffee Facebook Fortezza Coffee

seems like a bit of Seattle or Portland plopped in the windswept midwestern plains, where well picked espresso beans generate blended coffee beverages that could compete with anything from a bigger metropolis.

Fortezza’s menu also includes local craft beer, bento lunches, and other millennial favorites. Perhaps this is why throughout the day, Fort Wayne’s young mobile employees gather in Fortezza. Fortezza exemplifies why Niche ranked Fort Wayne the most cheap city in America: you can purchase a coffee every day and still save enough to buy a home.

Facebook page for The Lantern Coffeehouse and Roastery in Iowa

You wouldn’t expect to discover world-class coffee beans in Iowa, according to the Food Network. The Lantern Coffee House & Roastery in Sibley, though, is a far-flung treasure. The name stems from the nonprofit organization that founded the roastery, which enticed prospective customers with house-roasted coffee and freshly baked pastries. And whether you stay for the scripture or the sandwiches, you’ll feel rejuvenated in some manner when you leave.

Facebook: Kansas: Espresso to Go

When famous chef Alton Brown visited Wichita, he quickly added it to his list of the top ten coffee shops in the country. Why? Maybe it’s the huge jolts of energy given with a big dose of personality found under Espresso To Go Go’s giant disco ball. Its hidden menu (which has its own web page, endangering its mystery) is full of beverages that make your pulse race simply reading the ingredients.

But it’s not only the high-octane excitement that makes this area so interesting. A reverse osmosis water system and an imported Italian espresso machine are used to make their coffee. If you don’t want to put your heart to the test, Espresso To Go Go still provides lots of choices.

Please and Thank You, Kentucky

The chocolate chip cookies at Facebook Please & Thank You in Louisville’s East Market are much more famous than the coffee. But, guess what? This downtown classic has become a cookie-destination lover’s for anybody who has visited Louisville, and the sweetness you can mix with your espresso is often even more significant than the drink itself. Even though the cookies have become a mail-order staple worthy of Lou Malnati’s attention, going in for a cup of coffee may be just as satisfying without the baked goodies.

Abita Roasting Company,

If you’re in New Orleans, cross Lake Pontchartrain to find Louisiana’s greatest coffee shop. Abita Roasting is located near Madisonville, Louisiana.

If you sit on Abita’s large southern terrace, you’ll forget you’re just 45 minutes from New Orleans. Even on a hot Louisiana day, there’s something refreshing about sipping coffee on a shaded veranda overlooking the Tchefuncte River. Abita, more than anyplace else in the state, has a distinct feeling of place that is well worth the trip merely to see.

Maine: Coffee by Design is a Facebook page dedicated to the state of Maine.

Coffee by Design is still the percolating staple of Portland, Maine, despite the influx of hip coffee shops in the previous decade. They were selected Roast Magazine’s 2020 Roaster of the Year, in addition to becoming a household name in Portland (via Daily Coffee News). CBD leads the Rebel Blend Fund, a non-profit that promotes the arts in Portland, as part of its commitment to the community. It is primarily supported by sales of Coffee by Design’s Rebel Blend, which can be purchased in all of its locations.

Basecamp Coffee Company is based in Maryland.

Facebook
It’s a stretch to call the mountains of Allegheny County, Maryland something that demands a “base camp.” A hot cup of coffee from Basecamp in Cumberland, however, is the best way to start a day of trekking around the countryside. Owner Hayden Ort-Ulm refined his art by experimenting on his parents’ air pop popcorn machine, so you’ll find beans roasted in-house. Since then, he’s grown the business significantly, currently roasting beans for coffee shops and restaurants all throughout the area.

Facebook page for Curio Coffee and Wine in Massachusetts

When Curio Coffee doesn’t even roast their own beans but still has the greatest store in Beantown, you know they’re doing something right. And that something is waffles so delicious that you may forget the establishment also sells coffee for a moment.

While the waffles are unquestionably the highlight of this Cambridge coffee shop, the décor are also well worth the price of entry. The serpentine design on each cup, as well as the fiberglass cow’s head, are both intriguing. Didn’t we say there was wine? It’s absolutely OK if you want to come here for a nightcap and a morning pick-me-up.

These are the top-rated coffee shop in every state.

Anthology Coffee

Spending a Sunday morning in Detroit’s Eastern Market squeezing veggies and smelling candles may be exhausting. Yes, it’s tempting to stop in for a Coney Dog on the market’s edges, but instead, try stopping in at Anthology Coffee, which launched in 2019. The exposed brick and white wall room blends contemporary architecture with Detroit’s industrial background, and the coffee they serve is among the city’s most delicious. They also have bourbon-soaked coffee, which, although not giving you much of an alcoholic rush, will introduce you to tastes you’ve probably never had before.

Daily Grind Espresso Cafe in Minnesota has a Facebook page.

The name of this Stillwater coffee shop was a brilliant play on words relating to the coffee grinding process when it initially opened its doors. When the epidemic hit in March of 2020, however, Daily Grind adopted a new daily tradition: paying it forward. Since April of 2020, at least one customer has left a contribution to pay for the coffee of others, according to The Gazette.

This is a great location to treat yourself with a croissant or breakfast sandwich after a hard ride since it’s right at the end of Brown’s Creek Bike Trail. All of this is available on Daily Grind’s expansive patio, which has tranquil views of the St. Croix River.

Comet also functions as a micro-bakery, producing croissants that attract customers from all across Greater St. Louis. Comet established a spinoff croissant bakery named Comet Croissanterie, which may have become an even more popular attraction than the buzzing original.

Trû North Café in Montana
Facebook

James Langteaux left Hollywood for the little hamlet of Livingston, Montana, where he opened one of the country’s most innovative coffee shops. From the coffee to the candied bacon and eggs, Trû North Café has built a name for itself by incorporating maple syrup and bourbon in almost everything.

The beverages are pure Hollywood fantasy, such as the maple mountain cloud, which consists of a layer of whole milk infused with maple syrup, two shots of Yellowstone espresso, and foamed heavy cream. This is not your normal small-town place for dishwater swill, and it’s the type of hidden treasure that everyone wants to find when traveling through Big Sky region.

Facebook page for Amateur Coffee in Nebraska

An all-vegan coffee shop in the center of cow country may not be the first location that comes to mind. If you’ve ever visited Omaha, you know that this city is full of surprises. Amateur Coffee, a café started by husband and wife pair Jacob and Jasmyn Wichert with the goal of promoting vegetarianism, is one of them.

Their multicolored latte in a jar is maybe their most famous offering. They also offer to-go bags of their house blend coffees, each with a sticker produced by the shop. Don’t let the fact that Amateur’s tempting donuts are all vegan and their waffles are gluten-free mislead you. They may be a bit healthier than their sugar-and-butter-filled rivals, but even if they’re vegan, calories still matter.

Facebook page for The Roasting House in Nevada

Because the bar that currently supports a coffee machine was formerly the bar of the Brass Rail saloon, the Roasting House is like a calmed-down excursion back to the wild west. The Roasting House is infused with the city’s historic soul, and although the coffee is excellent, it’s the experience that makes this establishment so unique. They also roast in the same manner as the original Comstock coffee roasters, which were established over 150 years ago. You’ll get as near to a hot cup of coffee on the frontier as you can get in the twenty-first century at the Roasting House.

Revelstoke Coffee in New Hampshire has a Facebook page.

When you break down the name of this handmade coffee business in Concord, New Hampshire’s capital city, you’ll notice a compound word made up of the words “revel” (to enjoy an event) and “stoke” (to fuel with energy). Grover’s Mill Coffeehouse in New Jersey has a Facebook page.

It’s not every day that you come across an entire coffee shop dedicated to a 1930s radio prank. But that’s precisely the niche Grover’s Mill Coffeehouse occupies, with cups and décor inspired by Orson Welles’ terrifying 1938 radio version of War of the Worlds. Apart from the kitsch, you’ll discover some excellent and hard-to-find beans here, such as Dominican Red Honey coffee, as well as an odd menu with dishes like elk chili, pheasant and wild rice soup, and espresso venison stew.

Facebook: Ugly Duck Coffee, New York

We’re well aware that New York City has a plethora of excellent little coffee shops. But, if you want to go out of the city, try this not-at-all-ugly Rochester coffee shop, which brews a cup of coffee that’s better than anything you’ll get in Manhattan. Yes, we did say it.

Ugly Duck Coffee began as a series of rotating pop-up espresso bars throughout Rochester, but it quickly gained a cult following that rivaled that of any local coffee roaster. While the high-octane espresso drinks propelled Ugly Duck to where it is now, their pour-overs are the actual stars of the show, allowing the genuine taste of their globally sourced beans to come through. It’s also a great place for a quick breakfast, with pastries from some of the top bakeries in Flour City.

Facebook: Smelly Cat Coffeehouse & Roastery, North Carolina

Yes, Smelly Cat roasts their own coffee, and you’d be wise to bring a bag of their Organic Mexican or Colombian mix home with you if you’re in Charlotte. It’s the odd coffee shop that’s just as good for a blow-out brunch as it is for a day of burying your face in a laptop. With a welcoming atmosphere, a full menu, and plenty of cocktails on hand, it’s the odd coffee shop that’s just as good for a blow-out brunch as it is for a day of burying your face in a laptop.

Young Blood Coffee Co. in North Dakota is on Facebook.

Young Blood Coffee in the heart of downtown Fargo is one of the best places to warm up on a chilly, snowy morning. Inside, a nice cup of house-roasted coffee awaits you, a pleasant departure from the sometimes-bland stuff you’ll find on road trips throughout the nation.

The audience is equally youthful and lively, with several people having just done a workout next door. When you order at Young Blood, a tantalizing stack of Fargo’s greatest chocolate chip cookies stares back at you, swiftly negating that exercise. But go ahead and enjoy yourself. Keep in mind that keeping warm in a North Dakota winter requires a lot of additional calories.

As a consequence, you can either fuel up or wind down, with fresh roasted coffee and a selection of small batch, hard-to-find wines that would make most wine bars envy. That’s one of the reasons Food & Wine named it one of the best five coffee shops in America in 2019.

Facebook page for Cirque Coffee in Oklahoma

Tulsa, the art-deco and oil-money convergence of art and cowboy culture, is the city in Oklahoma where you might build a coffee shop with the tagline “Stay Weird.” Inside the halls of Cirque, where the pure white walls are adorned in comical paintings, you’ll find it embodied. Froot Loops and Cinnamon Toast Crunch may also be added to the coffee drinks.

Cirque isn’t a gimmicky coffee business, since their house-roasted coffee has a surprisingly sophisticated flavor profile. This is because Cirque just gently roasts its beans, allowing the beans’ distinct tastes to shine through. If you’re so taken with the experience that you desire a bag, it’ll come with a suitably bizarre design to remember you of it.

Spin Laundry Lounge is a Facebook page in Oregon.

When it comes to coffee in Portland, the obvious choice is Stumptown, the popular artisan coffee brand owned by Peet’s Coffee. Going for the obvious, well-known option, on the other hand, would be the most un-Portland thing to do. So, in line with the Portland spirit, we’ve decided on a laundry as the next best thing.

Not that offering coffee at a laundry facility hasn’t been done since vending machines were first, but the coffee at the Spin Laundry Lounge bar is really very delicious. This place is so amazing that you’ll come in even if you don’t need quarters. It’s definitely excellent enough to make Thrillist’s list of the top coffees in Portland. You may also want to hang around for the video games on the above mezzanine and the sports events broadcast on the walls on occasion. Is it Portland’s greatest coffee? At least in light of the diverse local coffee terrain, this is debatable. Is it, however, the most Portland spot to buy a cup of coffee? Absolutely.

Facebook page for Little Amps Coffee in Pennsylvania

Little Amps in Harrisburg is the epitome of its area, with allusions to the plethora of great stores in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. This state capital institution also partners with local ice cream producers to develop unique favors that will give your dessert an extra kick. Despite this, their local shops retain the atmosphere of a small town coffee shop, where they’ll remember your order without you having to say anything after a few days in town.

Dave’s Coffee,

When a state’s official drink is coffee, and you’re a key component in making it, winning the title of greatest coffee shop in the state is almost a foregone conclusion. According to WGBH, Dave’s coffee syrup is one of the key components in coffee milk, which is the official state drink of Rhode Island.

Of all, if you’re going to stop at this landmark along the Providence River, you may as well have a cup of real coffee, which Dave’s does as well. For the sampling, you’ll discover a half-dozen or more house-roasted concoctions from Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, and beyond. All of this provided for a pleasant, warm accompaniment to a walk along the city’s namesake river.

Facebook: South Carolina: Methodical Coffee

When you have a street named Coffee Street in your downtown, you’re setting the bar pretty high for the local coffee scene. Greenville, on the other hand, does not disappoint when it comes to coffee, and Methodical is arguably the most important reason for that.

Methodical takes great pride in its beans, roasting them on the lighter side to bring out the authentic taste of their origin. While the espresso drinks here are fantastic, a pour-over is the best way to taste the difference. Grab a bag to go and enjoy the stuff every morning if you don’t feel like brave the almost-perpetual lineups. We promise it will outperform anything on the Harris Teeter shelves.

Lighthouse Roasters, Washington

Facebook
It’s difficult to choose the best coffee shop in town as the standard-bearer for American coffee culture. And, as much as it was tempting to throw in the towel and declare the original Starbucks in Pike Place Market the victor, Seattle had superior coffee.

Lighthouse Roasters has been roasting beans in-house since 1993, when it was one of the first coffee shops in America to do so. In its original Greenwood site, they’re still going strong, displaying local artists and unusual mixes in a modest room that belies Lighthouse’s historic significance.

The business is also an excellent environmental steward, concentrating on sustainable sourcing.
